I ran cross country and track at Syosset High School in New York, a powerhouse program, which meant I was never a consistent varsity contributor. But I worked my butt off. The rewards weren’t seen in varsity letters or accolades, but rather through my ongoing battle against the clock.  After college, I turned my attention to the marathon, a daunting challenge that soon became one of life’s great joys. First, my goal was to finish one. Then, it became qualifying for, and running, the Boston Marathon. Then, it was the elusive sub-3-hour marath

“My freshman year of high school, I played football and baseball but wasn’t very good.  One Tuesday, my baseball coach punished the whole team by assigning everyone to complete 100 laps around the gym (10 miles) by the end of the week.  I completed it by the next day with no run training at all.  No one else even came close.  My teammates suggested maybe I wasn’t in the right sport.  I went out for the cross-country team the very next year and haven’t looked back.”
